3 Podcast Picks to Close Out the Summer

As the summer winds down, and our new residents and fellows settle in, this time of the year often offers a rare chance to exhale. For many of us, it’s a time to unplug a bit – whether that means catching up on sleep, getting away for a few days, or just enjoying a little space from the hospital grind. Personally, I also love this stretch because the sports world slows down, giving me the perfect excuse to catch up on some podcasts that I’ve bookmarked throughout the year.
Here are three standout episodes that I’ve listened to recently – I’d definitely recommend giving them a listen:
  1. Hearts on Fire – Myocarditis, The Cribsiders – Everything you need to know about making this tricky diagnosis in the ED. Featuring Dr. Jessica Laks (Heart Failure and Transplant, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital) and produced by my colleague Dr. Jessica Kelly, the group at The Cribsiders does a great job concisely reviewing when to suspect myocarditis, what tests can help make the diagnosis, and the first few steps of managing this condition in the ED. Pearls for all level of learners.

  1. A Conversation with Dr. Michael (Miki) Halberthal, AJMA – The Jewish Voice of Health – The CEO of Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, Israel discusses the incredible way that their underground fortified parking garage can be converted into an entire functioning hospital in just 72 hours. A captivating look at the ingenuity of the hospital to continue providing care under missile threats in Northern Israel.

  1. Advanced Imaging of Children in the ED: Ultrasound, CT, and MRI, PEM Currents – A great conversation between Dr. Brad Sobolewski (PEM, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital) and Dr. Jennifer Marin (PEM, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh) on judicious use of advanced imaging in the ED. Dr. Marin walks through tips and tricks on speaking with patients about why certain studies are not needed. A helpful episode even for the advanced level PEM clinicians.
