Introducing “The 3”: Learning PEM Smarter and Faster
At HipPEMcrates, we know pediatric emergency medicine can feel overwhelming. New research. Changing guidelines. A hundred conditions competing for your mental bandwidth at 2 AM.
That’s why we’re excited to introduce a simple organizing concept you’ll see often across our posts: “The 3.”
What is “The 3”?
“The 3” is our way of boiling down complex PEM topics into three high-impact takeaways.
Each “3” captures what you actually need to remember — whether it’s about diagnosis, management, or big-picture thinking. It’s the antidote to information overload: short, memorable, and clinically useful.
Think of it like a triple-shot espresso for your brain.
🔹 Three truths.
🔹 Three pitfalls.
🔹 Three must-know facts.
🔹 Three questions to ask.
🔹 Three management steps.
Whatever the topic, The 3 focuses on what matters most.
Why “The 3”?
We’re flooded with information in PEM. Every journal article, protocol update, or conference talk can feel urgent. But studies show (and our lived experience confirms) that we retain best when content is short, chunked, and repeated.
(Hello, cognitive load theory.)
By distilling teaching points into threes:
- You focus better.
- You remember longer.
- You apply faster at the bedside.
Plus, it’s easier to teach others when your own mental notes are organized into threes. (If you’ve ever taught students or residents on a busy shift, you know the power of “three quick things”!)
Why It Matters
We want HipPEMcrates to make your practice better, your learning lighter, and your teaching stronger. The 3 is just one small way we’re trying to bring focus, clarity, and joy back to PEM education.
Because when you’re racing against the clock — in the ED or in life — three things are often all you have time to remember.
✅ Stay tuned — every time you see “The 3,” you’ll know you’re getting the essential brain fuel you need.
And if you ever have a “3” you’d like to share with the community, drop us a line!
